Shiatsu is a Japanese therapeutic massage form developed alongside acupuncture but shiatsu, meaning ‘finger pressure’, replaces needles with hands and fingers, knees and feet, forearms and elbows, communicating through sensitive and intuitive touch.
The origins of Shiatsu lies deeply within Traditional Chinese Medicine – as with Acupuncture, the intention of a treatment is to restore and rebalance the body’s vital life force, its ‘Qi or Ki’.
A treatment is focused along specific energy pathways or ‘meridians’, accessing acupuncture points and influencing energy flow, blood circulation, flexibility and posture with techniques such as stretching, holding and applying connected body pressure.
Shiatsu’s gentle yet powerful Japanese roots can also be seen in its still, peaceful and respectful Zen influences – it’s meditative qualities that give us space from the pressures of daily life to self-reflect and listen to our intuition. Fen draws guidance from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Five Element theory (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood) – the natural rhythms of the Elements, represented through the Seasons, provide a powerful support system for us to connect with who we are, our power and our potential as human beings.
A course of Shiatsu treatments can help to find a greater sense of self awareness and connection, to build a deeper and more sustainable body memory; helping the whole being to feel more empowered and ‘in hara’ – well grounded, focused and engaging body, mind and spirit.
Receiving a shiatsu can be a deliciously coddled, nourishing experience – like a beautifully ‘held’ stretch. As a fully-clothed therapy, a treatment offers a space to pause from everyday pressures and fully receive in a safe environment.
A treatment with Fen is tailored to the individual; the first session will include a 30 minute consultation which will help to build a unique treatment plan that addresses the needs of the client, honouring not only the physical but their emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing.
At the end of each session, Fen will make specific recommendations using the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Aromatherapy and Yoga to promote and prolong the therapeutic benefits of the treatment. Shiatsu treatments always make me feel I have come back to myself. That whether it is energising or relaxing that I am somehow more complete as a body/mind/soul entity. It is both reassuring and invigorating and Fen is particularly good at creating a warm environment in which to feel totally coddled.
